Hukerenui Show Misses Record by 4'-

i Only by a few shillings did the j Hukerenul A. & P. Association fail I to create a new record on Saturday. With circumstances definitely against success as a result of the . recent imposition of restrictions on petrol, and because of the threatening weather, the gate receipts were within 4/- of last year’s record total £39 5/-, compared with £39 9/-. Actually the record figure should have been eclipsed, but owing to a misunderstanding, one of the gatekeepers failed to charge the amended, and increased admission fee, and lost enough j thereby to stop a new record. j The crowd, was not as large as last year, Ihe receipts being kept up as a result of an increase in admission I charges, ’ High Standard of Exhibits. Fine weather in the morning changed to heavy rain in the early afternoon, when it was expected that the majority of patrons would be attending, but later the skies cleared again and the association counted itself fortunate in being granted good conditions. j Judges were impressed with the standard displayed, particularly in j the indoor exhibits, j The needlework, knitting and fancy work was outstanding;- while the fruit j and produce section showed standard j quality exhibits. j Good competition was seen in the ! ring events and the stock exhibits I created attention. I The steer-riding contest proved to be a popular feature of the programme, and the presence of the Whangarei and County Pipe Band in the afternoon added to the attractions. Under the direction of the president (Mr F. C. G. Rusk) and the secretary (Mr L. J.
