Chinese Army Evades Encirclement
LONDON, February 9. A message from Chungking says the Chinese Army spokesman stated that the Chinese had evaded an attempt at encirclement and were now counterattacking the flanks of a Japanese force of 75,000. . He estimated that the Japanese casualties in the war so far are 362,000 killed and 1,087,000 wounded. A Chinese Government spokesman denied Japanese reports that the Chinese are planning air raids on Japan. Mr F. Langstone, Minister for Lands, and Commissioner for State Forests, will arrive in Whangarei this afternoon and will stay to-night at the Settlers’ Hotel. This evening he will receive a number, of deputations at the Whangarei County Office. Most important of the subjects dealt with will be 1 conservation of State forests, •which will be introduced by a deputation from the North Auckland Counties’ Association.
