Hawke’s Bay Fruit Crops Suffer

Hawke’s Bay was swept by heavy rain and a strong north-easterly gale on Saturday night and early yesterday morning. This caused damage to orchards and commercial and private gardens. What relief the much-needed rain brought to pastures and farms and garden crops was largely offset by the high wind, which continued throughout the greater part of yesterday. , Orchardists, especially those whose plantations are in exposed areas, report a good deal of damage through fruit being blown off trees and from rubbing and bruising.

Gravenstein apples, pears and plums appear to have suffered most. Ryegrass crops were not seriously affected.
