Summer Snowstorm In South Canterbury

[Per Press Association. Copyright.] * TIMARU, This Day.

One of the heaviest January snowstorms on record swept the Mackenzie Country on Saturday, causing death and severe hardship amongst newlyborn sheep. Heavy rain over the week-end caused minor flooding in some areas. Rain was general throughout the South Canterbury district. In the Mackenzie Country, snow, which was preceded by rain' began to fall on Saturday afternoon, and when it ceased at night, six inches had fallen. At Lake Tekapo, and down as far as Burke’s Pass, there was up to nine inches of snow. Sheep farmers say they have never known such a heavy fall of snow in January, and predict heavy losses amongst newly-born sheep.
