Chinese Make Important Gains
NEW YORK, December 19
Continuing their offensive as the result of which they hope soon to deliver Nanning, the Chinese, in spite of heavy losses, have recaptured Takofengyi, a strategic mountain pass 15 miles northward of Nanning, and also another position, says the Chungking correspondent of “The Times.”
The Chinese are holding points on the roads between Nanking and the sea, thus isolating the Japanese. According to Chinese and Japanese reports about 60 Japanese bombers raided at least five cities in the Szechuan Province yesterday. They caused heavy damage and many deaths. Chungking reports that factories, communications and Government buildings in the suburbs were damaged. Suifu, Chengtu. Tseliutsing and Liangshan wore hard hit.
