The death has occurred of Mrs Rudyard Kipling, widow of the famous British author and poet. It is announced that Major-General Sir Eugene Fiset has been appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec. The death occurred in Auckland yesterday of Mr Harry Cecil Tonks, of Remuera, an old resident of Auckland, and a prominent figure in racing and polo activities in the period before the Great War. Mr Tonks was aged 72. Mrs Mary Dillon, of Nixon Street, Hamilton, will celebrate her hundredth birthday next Wednesday. She was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in 1839. She still enjoys fairly good health, and takes a remarkable interest in world affairs. Mrs Dillon has been a resident of the Waikato for the last 75 years. Prior to the commencement of the ordinary business at yesterday’s meeting of the Otamatea County Council, the chairman (Mr R. Coates) welcomed Cr. H. S. McCarroll, the new member for the Marerelu riding. “I feel sure he will be a good member and the keen interest he has always taken in public affairs should stand him in good stead during the future,” said Mr Coates. Mr McCarroll thanked the chairman and councillors for their welcome.
