The “Daily Telegraph’s” Cairo correspondent stated that the New Zealand troops formed excellent material. Their keenness ivas unmatched. Imperial officers were surprised at the condition of Dominion horses, and it was stated that no British cavalry regiment could have brought them out better. Prince Hussein, in a newspaper interview, hoped that, in future, the Egyptians would hasten to defend their country as the New Zealand and Australian troops had done. Five hundred meetings were held throughout Italy commemorating Oderbank, who was executed in 1882 for conspiracy against Emperor Francis Josef of Austria. The meetings developed into antiAustrian and pro-war demonstrations. Italy demanded from Turkey an ■explanation of the movement of 4000 Arab's under Turkish and German officers against Tripoli'. A rupture in relations was threat- | ened, failing a satisfactory reply. ■ The “Standard’s” Paris corres- | pondent reported that 60 Belgian women’at Latour refused to bury < German dead. I They crossed themselves, and i were immediately shot. f A fierce artillery duel preceded [ the Allies’ offensive at Arras. The \ Allies captured trenches over a ■ front of about one and a-quarter i miles.
