Fire Engine Without Works
‘‘We've bought a fire engine but we do not know if it will move or not.” “At the moment the front tyres are flat, and if we looked inside we would probably find some of the plugs missing and also the battery ‘pinched.’ ” These statements were made at the monthly meeting of the Kawakawa Town Board by the chairman, Mr D. A, Williams.
He was replying to a suggestion by a member of the board that the fire engine should be registered, when he stated that in his opinion money spent on the brigade was a waste, Mr D. Lusk, disagreeing with the chairman’s remarks, said that without the brigade a considerable amount of property might have been destroyed in the town.
The chairman replied that when the brigade was instituted the members were vei'y enthusiastic and trained, but the practices had practically ceased.
“Wo can safely say that we have done more for the brigade than any previous board," he said, “and we have had less results.” Question of Carrying On.
He then moved a motion, which was seconded by Mr G. R. Cookson, that before the brigade was registered the board should find out if the brigade members intended to carry on. Mr F. Paul; The town board will be responsible for any damage that may be done if the fire engine is used and not registered. The chairman; It can’t do much damage if it can’t move. It is up to these chaps to do something. Mr Bates: I carried a hose up to the last fire, and got there before the brigade. The motion was then put to the meeting and carried.
