Inspecting Northland Roads For Holiday Tourists
Most motor tourists now have their interest focussed on the Wellington Exhibition, but after Christmas, it is anticipated that increasing numbers would be turning their thoughts to the National Centennial function at Waitangi. To anticipate inquiries by obtaining up-to-date information for holidaymakers in Northland, the Touring Manager of the A.A. (Mr R. E. Charnptaloup), together with three members of the touring staff, have been visiting by-roads and tourist amenities east of the main highway between Whangarci and Waimate North.
The roads generally were being brought into goad shape by the Pub-
He Works Department and county engineers, Mr Champtaloup said. Extensive improvements to the Paihia Road were seen under the worst conditions in pouring rain on Saturday, but it was expected that with a week's fine weather the new formation would iron into good shape.
Fine Scenery
The new road giving access to Rawhiti and Cape Brett especially appealed to Mr Champtaloup. Further construction was required before traffic would be able to proceed past the Bluff, four miles from the main Russell-Whangarei highway.
Much of the Rawhiti route runs through typical Northland country—bush, scrub and grassland. From a point near the bluff extremely fine views were obtainable of long lengths of rugged coastline, which, on Saturday," were enlivened by the rich colours of the pohutukawa, just coming into flower.
