£6,500 Observatory Mirror Buried For Safety
The mirror which was ordered for the RadclifTe Observatory telescope on the outskirts of Pretoria has been buried in a hole in the ground “somewhere in England.” It has been covered with sandbags for protection. The fate of the mirror was revealed by the director of the RadclifTe Observatory (Dr H. Knox Shaw).
He was now investigating the possibility cf having the mirror completed by special permission in England, or failing this, in America.
The mirror, ho continued, was insured for £ 6,500, the premium being £4OO a year.
