“THE EARLY SETTLERS—IBOO-1840”

The lecture will illustrate, from old jourhals and the like? some of the typical conditions of life facing the pioneer colonist in the ’forties, e.g.—

(1) Conditions on board the emigrant ships on their long run from England via the Cape to New Zealand (usually about 100-140 days). Inadequate space between decks, scanty provisions, bad water, insufficient lifesaving apparatus, etc. (2) Conditions in New Zealand —the New Zealand bush and the problems of clearing it —bad communications—high costs of labour and commodities. (3) Maori troubles, especially Wairau Massacre, and Hone Heke’s war.

(4) “Town” life in Auckland —foundation of the city—early Auckland “society.”

(5) Politics and Finance. Some strange taxation experiments under Governor Fitzßoy. (6) Qualities needed by a pioneer.

Professor Rutherford has made an intensive study of the early history of New Zealand, and on his recent visit to England was able to collect many documents throwing a new light on the life of early settlers. An invitation is extended by the Whangarei Borough Council to all citizens to hear Professor Rutherford at the Town Hall on Wednesday, September 6th, at 8 p.m. No collection.
