America Thought Hitler Was Bluffing

KAIKOHE, This Day.

“While we were in the United States the people we met did not think that war would eventuate, believing that Hitler was bluffing.” This statement was made by Mr and Mrs J. Pausina, of Kaikohe, when they returned to their home early this week after an extended tour of Canada and United States.

Summarising their tour, Mr and Mrs Pausina said that the most striking part of a tour of America was the vastness of the country itself and the splendour and dependability of American hospitality and service.

Mrs Pausina described the shopping centres of New York and other large cities as intriguing, arid said that practically anything could be obtained on Sundays.

Travelling Rooms,

They were both greatly impressed with the rail services in both Canada and U.S.A., and described the carriages on all American trains as “travelling sitting-rooms.” Describing New York, Mr Pausina said that in the city there were 19,000 taxi-cabs, 8000 public schools and 72 different languages were used.

‘T never saw a man under the influence of liquor throughout the tour,” Mr Pausina stated. Traffic Control.

In New York the traffic was under excellent control, and it was an accepted fact in the town that New York had less accidents in its streets than any other city in the world. Pedestrian traffic was contx'olled by lights and policemen, and at the main intei'sections five policemen kept the vehicle and pedestrian traffic steady. Subways are being built at most intersections so as to save time for motorists, and the control-men. Towns and centres of interest visited on the tour were San Francisco, Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver, the Grand Canyon, Lake Louise, Victoria Glaciers, Banff Springs Hotel, Fort William, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Montreal, New Yox’k and the World Fair, Washington, Chicago, Kansas City, Hollywood and Los Angeles.
