Early Success Over Steeplechase Course

I Little Briton, who won the I Egmcnt-Wanganui Hunt Cup Steeplej chase at New Plymouth last week, ! was having only his second race over j country. In his first effort he ran well and finished close up in the Andrew i Kay Memorial Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at the Waipa meeting in Juno. Subsequently he schooled prom-i isingly at Ellcrslie prior to the Pakuranga meeting, but at that fixture he went back to hurdling and missed the money. Little Briton is a nine-year-old gelding by Little England from an unnamed mare by Maniapoto, so that he is well bred for the jumping game. He did not do his first racing till last season, when he was twice successful in hunters’ hurdles events during the spring, and finished into the money behind Ellanui and Loombination at Ellei'slie in June.

Little Briton is owned by Mr L. R. Kay, of Te Awamutu, and is trained at Te Rapa by A. L. Seifert.

Classic Prospect. Orelio, who is doing fine work at Takanini. may be one of the likely contenders for classic honours this spring, his next engagements being in the Champion Plate and the Avondale Guineas. This time last spring Orelio was racing splendidly, but he was doomed not to win a classic, although ho was unplaced only once in seven starts. The Lirnond —Watcrwings colt has yet to return the full 1000 guineas paid for him at the national sales, but •he should turn out a bargain in the end.
