Local Government Amalgamation Bill
It was evident that the Local Government Amalgamation Schemes Bill would come before Parliament in the present session. Advice to this effect was received from the Electric Power Beards and Supply Authorities’ Association by the Whangarei Borough Council last night. The council briefly discussed the Bill and objected strongly to certain clauses in the original scheme. “It would seem that the Bill contains proposals for the sotting up of a tribunal which may advise the Minister to bring about amalgamations of both like and unlike authorities." stat-j ed the Mayor. Mr W. Jones. | The association should be pressed to ask for the deletion of such clauses j on account of the essential difference between trading electric power boards and other local authorities, which had tdready been stressed to the Government' in evidence. A motion was passed on the lines indicated by the Mayor, who, as the council’s delegate at the Municipal Supply Authorities’ Conference, was asked to bring the matter forward at that conference with a view to a clear statement of the position for the guidance of the association’s executive.
