Canada’s Declaration When Parliament Meets
LONDON, September 3
The statement of the Canadian Prime Minister (Mr W. L. Mackenzie King) that the Dominion was at war on the side of Britain was forwarded to the Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain), who replied as follows:
“My colleagues and I received with the deepest appreciation your statement of policy. “In these critical, anxious hours it has afforded us the greatest possible encouragement to know that Canada is as one with Britain in the determination to resist aggression.”. The Government, in proclaiming the War Measures Act, 1914, declared the “existence of a state of apprehended war.” The militia, naval services and air force have been placed on an active service basis. The Cabinet met at 9 a.m. Although it is taken for granted that Canada will join Britain, Australia and New Zealand in declaring war, it is virtually certain the actual declaration will await the meeting of Parliament, which will meet on Thursday. ,
