Matua’s Passengers Have Unenviable Trip

r Special to “Northern Advocate”'] AUCKLAND, This Day.

The Union Company's steamer Matua reached Auckland on Saturday from Rarotonga after what was described aj the worst trip in the memory of her officers and crew. Many of the 30 passengers on board had their first meal for many days when the ship reached the calm water of the Auckland Harbour. Often, the officers stated, the wind reached hurricane force. The decks were 'awash for days at a time, and the water frequently crashed up to the height of the bridge, where th a helmsman had an unenviable task. The trip from Rarotonga usually takes the Matua four and a half days, but on this occasion it took her five days five hours.

No damage to the ship was reported by Captain A. H. Prosser, and none of the crew suffered. Few of the passengers, however, were ever seen outside their cabins.
