Yugoslavs Eliminate Germans

DAVIS CUP TENNIS

(Received 1.30 p.m.) ZAGREB, July 29

Nine thousand spectators wildly cheered the victory, by three rubbers to two, of Yugoslavia over Germany in the European zone final of the Lavis Cup.

The German players considered that the crowd’s enthusiasm spoiled their game, resented their failure, and caustically commented on the crowd’s behaviour.

Henkel intimated that no German tennis player would again take the court at Zagreb.

The results were;—

Mitic (Yugoslavia) beat Gopfert, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3; Puncec (Yugoslovia) beat Henkel, 10-8, 6-3, 6-0.

The Seabright Tourney

NEW YORK, July 28.

Further results at the Seabright tennis tournament, in which two of the Australian Davis Cup teams and leading American players are competing, are as follows. —

Men's Singles.—Semi-finals:, Parker beat Hunt, 3—6, 6—4, 6—o, I—6,1 —6, 6 —l; McNeill beat Grant, 7—5, 6 —2, 6—l. Combined Doubles. —Peacock and Miss Canning beat Crawford and Mrs Johnson, 6 —3, 6—4; Quist and Miss Marble beat Moorhead and Mrs Coleman, 6 —l, 6—l. Quarter-finals; Quist and Miss Marble beat Shields and Mrs Andrus, 6—2, B—6. Semi-finals: Quist and Miss Marble beat Riggs and Miss P. Betz, 4—6, 6—3, 6—3. The winners will meet Cooke and Mrs Fabyan in the final tomorrow.

Ladies’ Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss Helen Bernhard, an unseeded New York player, beat Miss Bundy, 6—2. 6—2; Miss Workman beat Miss Canning. 7—9, 6—4. 6—2. Ladies' Doubles.—Mrs Fabyan and Miss Jacobs beat Mme. Henrotin and Mrs Andrus, 6—3, 6—3.

Bromwich And Hopman Make Clean Sweep

VANCOUVER, July 29.

The Australian Davis Cup players J. Bromwich and H. Hopman, had a clean sweep in the Western Canadian tennis championships.

A record crowd witnessed the play and ,at the conclusion of the tourney the Australians received a remarkable ovation.

The Australian captain, Hopman, remarked that Bromwich’s form had never been better. Results were as follows. — Men’s Singles.—Bromwich defeated Hopman, 6 —2, 6—B, 6 —o. Men’s Doubles.—Bromwich and Hopman defeated L. Hall and W. Ready (California), 6 —2, 6—2, 6 —4. Combined Doubles.—Bromwich and Miss E. Young defeated W. Hoggs and Mrs E. Harper (California), G—2, 6—4, 6—o.

Quist this morning practised singles for the first time since Sunday. After working out for an hour with J. Hunt, he was forced to quit on account of the wet court and the fear of wrenching his ankle, which is not too sound. ZAGREB, July 29.

In the Davis Cup contest, Henkel and Menzel (Germany) defeated Puncec and Kukuljevic (Yugoslavia), 9-7, 4-6. 6-4. 3-6, 6-1, in the doubles.
