Spotlight 0n... Mr de Valera
Mr Eamon De Valera, President of the Executive Council, and Minister for External Affairs, Irish Free Slate, since 1932, who said in the Eire Senate that the activities of the 1.R.A., if allowed to continue, would lead to anarchy. Born on October 14, 1882, of Spanish father and Irish mother, he was educated at the Christian Brothers’ School, Charleville, and Blackrock College. Commandant in the Irish National insurrection, 1916, he was sentenced to death, but was Released the following year. Escaping from Lincoln Gaol after a further arrest, he raised a loan of six million dollars for the Irish Republican Government in America. He teas president of Sinn Fein, 1917-26, when Fianna Fail was founded. He was President of the Council of the League of Nations at its 68th and special sessions, 1932.
