Isla Hatrick Wins Atkinson Essay Prize
SPECIAL vb;b vb vb vci : KATKOHE, This Day. | The annual, essay competition tor pupils of I he. Kaikoho District High i Schol resulted in Islay Hatrick, with 1 88 marks, winning’ the prize donated by Mr H. T. Atkinson.
Second place was filled by Eric Jerkovich. with 82 marks, and Stanley Blow. 81 marks, was third. This is the third occasion the competition has been held. The judge this year was Colonel W. R. Lang, of Waipn. The competition was originated by Mr Atkinson, with the idea of interesting the young people in some important topic of current history, and, to this end. the choice of the subject is undertaken by him. This year’s subject was
As Minister of Defence what steps I would take for the adequate defence of New Zealand.”
The standard of essay submitted Was high, and, after the teachers al the school had reduced tile entries to 20, these wore submitted to the judge. The winner’s effort was marred only by several careless spelling errors, but the subject matte) 1 revealed an interesting viewpoint for a child of 14 years. The essay is printed elsewhere in this paper.
