Town Tit-Bits

Social affairs have slackened off somewhat this week and the indifferent weather has been largely responsible for more informal gatherings round cheery log fires. Mrs W. T. Surman and Mrs L. G. Miller were joint mah jongg hostesses on Friday night at the former’s home in Nixon Street. Giant gerberas made charming decorations in the drawing room and some of the players were Mesdames W. A. Christiansen, Eric Thomson, Ray Dempster, E. K. Good, D. O'Donoghue, L. A. Johnson, J. W. Morion. A. M. Hart. S. C. Blanshard, E. B. Glanville, Garner, C. A. Jones. J. Harrison, A. Roland and Eric Gumming.

On Monday evening Mrs E. Gumming hostessed another enjoyable mah jongg party at her home, where bowls of poppies made attractive decorations. Mrs Gumming chose an emerald green chiffon gown in which to receive her guests, among whom were Mesdames R. K. Trimmer, D. O’Donoghue, F. A. Farmer, E. B. Glanville, W. T. Surman, L. A. Johnson, David Singer, L. G. Miller, D. J. Goodwin, Ray Dempster. A, M. Hart and Eric Thomson.

Tables were set for mah jongg again on Saturday evening at Mrs John G. Robertson’s home. The hostess looked charming in a sky blue lace gown and some of her guests were Mrs Clayton Thorne, Mrs Bruce Marshall, Mrs L. Adams, Mrs L. J. Waddell, Mrs A. M. Hart, Mrs Eric Harrison, Mrs A. H. Crane; Misses W. E, Lamb, E. Drummond, Myra Sword Cleaver and Evelyn Cleary.

A number of our lads and lasses braved the weather conditions on Wednesday evening and motored out to the Kamo Springs hall to “tread the

Some of those there were Mrs Ron Masters, Mrs Norman Le Roy; Misses “Teddy" Searle, Zoe and Nell Ward, Joan Mirrielees, Thelma Smith, Patricia Ryder. Peggy Powell, Olwyn Trigg, Norma Storey, Adams, Joyce Hosking. Margaret Chambers, Judy Menzies. Marion Prebble, Wright. Yvonne Deere. Barbara Walker.

Bridge seems to have been completely ousted this week. Mrs G. M. Robertson had man jongg at her home on Monday afternoon. A cheery log fire was a welcome sight to the guests, whom Mrs Robertson received wearing a smart petrel blue frock. Those there were Mrs Ross Nelson, Mrs Eric Thomson, Mrs Clayton Thorne. Mrs R. K. Trimmer, Mrs E. Dyer, Mrs A. M. Hart. Mrs R. C. Napier, Mrs W. J. Glanville.

There have been quite a number of comings and goings this week. Betty Wilson left last week-end with her sister, Mrs Basil Pole, for Stratford. Mrs Harold Cotter is spending a few days in Auckland, while Mrs Jim Shaw has her mother, Mrs Morris, of Taranaki, as her guest. Jocelyn Veale is the guest of Mrs Ross Nelson, and Peggy Powell, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs N. G. Powell, returned to Auckland on Thursday. Mrs J. A. S. McKay and her daughter, Mrs Clinton Jones, paid a flying visit to the city and Quona Turner will be the guest of her sister, Mrs Ron Masters, for the week-end. Mrs Eric Graham left on Friday and will be the .guest of Mrs Cort Astley, of Dargaville. Mrs Henry Langlands, of Okaihau, spent a few days in Whangarei and was the guest of Mrs D. O’Donoghue.
