Women and Children Shelter on Gunboat

LONDON, July 27. Twenty-eight British women and children from Tangku and Taku spent last night on a tugboat in the river, as a precautionary measure, in view of the continued anti-British riots and demonstrations. H.M.S. Sandwich stood by. Evacuation is not planned, although the Chinese demonstrators say they cannot guarantee the safety of Britons longer than a month. Japan has informed the British Consulate, as a result of the protest lodged on July 24, following riots at Tangku, that the local Chinese authorities are responsible for law and order. Chinese irregulars in Shanghai, sent a letter to residents around the western perimeter of the International Settlement demanding a protection tax. Several paid up, after which they received a written guarantee of immunity from further trouble. The tax is being used to finance the irregulars.
