English Artisans Arrive.—Mors than 80 English artisans arrived in Welington yesterday by the Rangitata from London. Many were accompanied by their wives and families. Of them 47 were under engagement to the Government. but the rest had come independently. drawn by the prospects of high wages and shorter hours.

Snow Causes Death. —The first reported death directly attributable to snow occurred at Dunedin yesterday, when a workman who was clearing snow from ,a roof fell some 35 feet through a skylight, and was killed almost instantly when his head struck a counter at the bottom of his fall. The victim was Mr William Cooper, aged 30, whose parents reside at Lochiel, near Winton.

Efficiency Tests.—The Wanganui Public Service Association decided at a meeting yesterday to make an emphatic protest against the newly prescribed efficiency tests. The resolutions will be.forwarded to the Dominion executive with a request that if the Public Service Commissioner refuses to repeal the regulations, the executive should take up the matter direct with the Government.

Hop Marketing.—The establishment of a hop marketing committee is provided for in regulations contained in the Gazette. The committee will comprise five producers’ representatives and one Government representative appointed by the Minister of Marketing. The first election will be held in September.

Telegraph Regulations.—A complete consolidation of .all telegraph regulations, the first for about 30 years, was issued in last night’s Gazette. The new regulations also validate changes resulting from the 1938 communications conference in Cairo and recent changes in domestic regulations in respect of letter telegrams and other matters.
