78 Members Of Kaitaia Scots’ Club

[Special lo “Northern Advocate "l KAITAIA. This Dav.

The Kaitaia Scottish Society lias met with much public favour, and the Ingleside in the Masonic Social Hall on Saturday evening was highly successful. Chief Stewart presided and Mr J. Ccwie was in charge of the programme. There was an attendance of about 50. Forty new members were elected, bringing the total membership up to 78. A bright fire gave warmth to the atmosphere, and a friendly, happy relationship between all in the hall made the evening pass pleasantly and all too quickly. The programme included songs by Mrs Begley, Mr Jim Parker and Mr Joe Cowie.

Mr R. Lewis gave solos on the mouth organ and Miss Tulloch gave two recitations. All of the performers were recalled. The accompanistes wore Mrs J. Cowie and Mrs J. Parker. An invitation to 101 l Scottish stories met with a good response. National Dances Appreciated. There were a number of Scottish dances, and so well did these take that it was decided to devote some lime at each Ingleside to these dances, affording those not familiar with the steps an opportunity to learn. During the business part of the meeting, Mr W. J. Hoskin was elected a member of the executive, Mrs Eric Clark pianiste and Mr Ken Fyfe auditor. The secretary (Mr C. McKinnon) reported that the number of pupils for the classes to be started for Scottish national dances by Mr McLennan now totalled 30. A committee was appointed to arrange the programme for the next Ingleside. Whangarei Concert Party. In connection with the visit of a concert party from Whangarei, it was reported that arrangements had been made for billeting all but four, and offers to take the remainder were quickly forthcoming. Mr McKinnon mentioned that some difficulty was likely to be experienced in providing sufficient seating accommodation for the concert, and it was left with those members who can to provide additional seating. A committee was set up to provide supper for the concert party and also for country friends attending the concert.

A break was made in the programme on Saturday night for supper, the provision of which had apparently been in very good hands. There is every prospect that the Scottish society is going to prove one of the strongest and, from a social point of view, the best organisation yet formed in Kafiaia.
