Achilles Loses Another Amphibian

The cruiser Achilles lost her Wal rus amphibian aeroplane off Aitutaki Cook Islands, yesterday, according t< cabled advice received from Raro tonga and officially confirmed by Roy al Naval headquarters, Wellington. The aeroplane is understood t have capsized when coming alongsid the warship after a flight, and to hav sunk. There were no casualties. This is the second amphibian loj by the Achilles in the past fei months. A similar mishap occurre when she was passing through th Red Sea on her return from Englan in April. Dramatic Escape. Pilot-Lieutenant Sykes and Lead- , ing-Telegraphist Trent both made a dramatic escape from the sinking plane in shark-infested waters. Lengthy flights had already been made at Rarotonga, Mauke and Atiu, where the natives were awed by the first “iron bird” they had seen. No previous trouble was experienced. It rvill be impossible for a diver to operate, owing to the tremendous depth. Captain Parry informed a Press Association representative that an inquiry will investigate the cause.
