Farmers Urge Royal Commission In Shipping

WELLINGTON, This Day,

A remit urging that a Royal Commission should be ■ appointed to investigate the unsatisfactory position in regard to shipping facilities for export, with particular attention to, the incidence of handling stock at New. Zealand ports, was passed at the New Zealand Farmers’ Union conference. It was decided to urge also that farmers Should have direct representation on all inquiries into waterfont disputes, especially in regard to the fixing of wages.

Another remit stressed the heed to encourage young farmers to settle on the land.

A second remit, which was not adopted, suggested that suitable European immigrants should be encouraged to settle on the land.

On the subject of defence, the .resolution of the conference was that it appreciated the Government’s efforts in regard to defence, but strongly urged the introduction of. universal military training.
