Maoris Must Pay Their Rates

f Special to “Northern Advocate ”J

RAWENE, This Day

Despite claims by some natives that attempts to force Maoris to pay rates is a contravention of the spirit of the Treaty of, Waitangi, the Hokianga Counfly Council is determined that the natives who are in a position to do so. shall pay their county rates.

The matter was discussed in committee by the council.

Afterwards it was announced that the Government view was that Maoris now received identical privileges with •he European, and that consequently they must be prepared to accept their responsibilities so far as rating is concerned.

"Where the Native can pay. he must pay,” is the Government's attitude to our rating problem.” said Mr H. Chappell, secretary. Consistent with its determination to make the Maori face up to his obligations. the council decided to organise a number of meeting throughout the county to make the position perfectly plain to Maori landholders.
