Keen Bidding For Silverdale Jerseys

Buyers were present from all parts of the North at the dispersal sale of Mr George Hodgson’s “Silverdale” pedigree Jerseys at Whakapara today.

One of the largest catalogues ever offered to local buyers—l 44 head—met with steady competition, and some good prices were realised.

Despite the unfavourable weather the stock came forward in excellent condition. Mr Hodgson had intimated his intention of selling out all his pedigree animals with only a few exceptions, and buyers had looked forward to this sale in order to secure some good Ifnes. ’ Mr Hodgson’s herd is one of the oldest established in Northland and he has kept himself very up-to-date in his methods, with the result that “Silverdale” has become a name known throughout the Auckland province. Among Best in N.Z. Competent judges have expressed the view that the herd compares more than favourably with the best Jersey herds in the Dominion,

It is more than 30 years since Mr Hodgson commenced dairying on his property at Whakapara. In those days the Jersey was not considered the best type for Northland, but Mr Hodgson persisted in his efforts, and his confidence has been more than justified.

Imported stock formed the basis of the herd, the principal strain being that of the famous Majesty line, introduced through descendants of Majesty’s Fox (Imp.) and Soumise Majesty. 75 Guineas Best Price of Morning.

Top price at this morning’s bidding was 75 guineas for a six-year-old v.h.c. cow, Woodend Laburnum, purchased by Mr Davis Mclnnes, of Marua. Another good purchase was by Mr R. M.
