THE spring and autumn are the seasons for beautiful sunsets. Sometimes night after night there are skies of flame and pearl, almost blotting out. for a few brief minutes, the surrounding country side. The sunset last night was most unusual, and gave me a feeling of loneliness. Half of the sky was covered by a huge grey cloud that serned to have been chiselled into place: the other half was scattered with tiny rosepink clouds, and the sky itself as seen in glimpses, was a delicate greenish-blue. The sleeping hills were dark and austere.
I do not know why I felt so lonely. It was certainly a kind of loneliness different from being by oneself in a crowd; it was a loneliness in which 1 seemed to be lifted away from myself into a world which I did not know. It was probably the grandeur which- gave
me the feeling, and the absolute contrast of it all.
It so happened the same evening, that I was reading a book in which the writer was questioning the assertion that “there is a God Who knows and cares for everyone of us.“ This was certainly very strange, he said, as God has so much else to do—thc sky. the sea. the earth, the regulation of everything. how could He have time to cave for him? But as I see it. it seems tire right thing, and Ihe only thing that could be. After all. He made us in His likeness, so He must love us.
Olp those who taste that love is sweet Set waymarks for all doubtful feet That wander on in search of it!
