Five Killed And Five Injured In BusTruck Collision
MELBOURNE, March 17,
Five people were killed and five inlured late this afternoon when a suburban bus travelling from Boxhill to Mentone collided with a three-ton truck carrying a load of sand at Oakleigh, nine miles from Melbourne. The whole side of the bus was ripped away.
The only two occupants of the truck, a man and a boy, escaped seri-
ous injury
All the passengers were thrown on to the road amid a litter of woodwork, glass and sand from the truck, the side of which was also torn away.
The names of those killed, three wo* men. a girl and a child, have not yet been ascertained.
The injured were; Mr Edward Jenkinson, the bus driver; Margaret Dowling. aged 8; Kathleen Dowling, aged 10; Mrs Mary Devine, aged 28; and Mr Alfred Whitworth, the truck driver, who had slight facial injuries. Extraordinary difficulty is being exptrienced in identifying the dead. A woman, aged about 30, is believed to be the mother of the Dbwling girls, and another girl, aged 12, is believed to be another member of the Dowling family. There is no clue yet os to the identity of the others.
