N.Z. Emulating Ostrich, Says Mr. Endean
t Special to “Northern Advocate’’] WELLINGTON, This Day.
Mr W. P. Endean, M.P., in a statement yesterday, criticised the provision for naval defence in New Zealand. He compared the present position with that of former years, and recalled the recommendation of Earl Jellicoe.
“At present Great Britain is spending £23 10/- a head of population on defence, ‘Australia £4 a head, exclusive of the provision for a standing army of 10,000, and New Zealand £2 a head,” said Mr Endean. “From last year’s estimates it will be noted that New Zealand’s contribution to naval defence was £802,190. These figures surely prove that New Zealand is suffering from what is known as the cult of the ostrich.”
