Women’s Institutes

Mangonui The Mangonui Women’s Institute held its annual meeting Mrs R. T. Wrathall presiding. The new officers elected for the ensuing year were: President, Mrs R. T. Wrathall; secretary. Miss D. Wilton; executive committee, Mesdames R. T. Wrathall, W. Subritzky, J. Feisst, Miss W. Wilton and Miss M. Wrathall. The roll call was “useful hints,” and the hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs R. T. Wrathall and Mrs Stan Harris. Matapouri. The Matapouri Women’s Institute held its annual meeting on March 15, the meeting being well attended. Mrs Morrison was re-elected president and the secretary, Mrs O’Carroll was also re-elected. ■ A committee meeting was arranged for April 5 and the usual monthly meeting will be on April 19. During the afternoon both the president and secretary were presented with a charming spray of flowers in appreciation of their past year’s work. The competition for the month, “a toy,” , was won by Mrs Milligan, with Mrs Morrison and Mrs T. Clements equal for second. . . There were two other competitions during the afternoon, Mrs Jenkins ■ . i, i Winning one and Mrs T. Clements the Other.' At the “bring , and buy” stall the trading was brisk and everything was sold in n remarkably short time. MeSdames J. Bines and Milligan were hostesses for the afternoon. Awanui | The Awanui Institute met on March ;10 when: there was a good attendance. Mrs McCarthy, the president, presided, and -the meeting opened with the Institute song. Members voted in favour of the annual Institute show being held in Kailaia. Officers of the incoming committee are as follows; President, Mrs McCarthy; secretary. Mrs C. Thompson; treasurer, Mrs Sutton; vice-presidents, Mesdames Johnson and Williamson, committee, Mesdames Switzer, Blithe, Berghan, Donnelly and Gill. Mrs C. Thompson wen the pikelet competition. The competition for drawn thread arlicle has been postponed until the April meeting. A damty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Akast, Ball and E. R. Bird.

Takahue The annual meeting of the Takahue Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday last, Mrs. H. Carr presiding over a large atendance of members. The election for the new committee resulted as follows: —President, Mrs. H. Carr; vice-presidents, Mesdames Banks and Sanders; secretary, Mrs. B. Wright (to act in conjunction with Mrs. J. ; Kitchen); organising secretary, Mrs. N. Masters; treasurer. Mrs. Braithwaite; committee, Mesdames Quarterman, Saunders, Adams, Bastard, Rogers, Misses V. Rogers, Y. Bastard, and I. McCullough. ( Mrs. H. Sanders, on behalf of the I members, presented Mrs. H. Carr with a dainty brush, comb and mirror, as an appreciation of her services to the Institute since its inception. i Mrs. Banks, vice-president, presented bouquets to the officers of the past year, Mesdames Carr, Kitchen, Masters and Braithwaite. Instead of the usual monthly competition a “bring and buy” was held. This was most successful and added considerably to the funds. The roll call was a soup recipe. The luncheon hostesses were Mesdames Kitchen, Irving and Masters. The “something for nothing” was won by Mrs. Warner, Senr-., and a competition by Mrs. H. Carr, It was decided to hold the April meeting one week earlier than usual, competitions to be- three fruit squares and three largest apples. The roll call is to be “the biggest fright I ever had.” Community singing and a game conpleted the afternoon. The social hostesses were Mesdames Sanders, Saunders and B. Wright.
