Lord Straibolgi Reassures Australia And New Zealand
LONDON, March 16. In referring to his recent visits to New Zealand and Australia, Lord Strabolgi, in the House of Lords, today said he found that a deplorable effect had been produced by ,a speech made by Mr Chamberlain last year, in which he had said the Government’s tasks were The defence of home territories. trade routes, aria any overseas territories which, were attacked. This had been misunderstood and regarded as chronological.
New Zealand and Australia thought they would be the last to be supported in case of attack. “Our anxiety in the Great War was to induce our enemies to go to sea,” Lord Strabolgi said. “I suggested to my friends in New Zealand and Australia that there would be great joy in Whitehall if they heard that a hostile squadron was bound for the South Pacific, for it is just what we want.
“Mischief arose from Mr Chamberlain’s unfortunate phraseology, and the matter should be put right as soon as possible.”
