In the House of Commons, Lieut. - Commander Fletcher (Labour—Nuneaton) asked if the Government would consider sending Sir Maurice Hankey to the defence conference in New Zealand, as his great knowledge and experience would render his presence invaluable. Mr Chamberlain said that he would consider it, but arrangements already made would probably be found satisfactory. Keeper of a thousand political and military secrets, Sir Maurice Hankey retired from the position of secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence, secretary to the British Cabinet, and clerk to the Privy Council, to become a director of the Suez Canal Company last June.
