Women's Institutes

Hakaru Tho Hakaru United Institute held a variety afternoon for their March meeting. There was a very large attendance of members and visitors from surrounding Institutes, who congregated to bid farewell to one of their foundation members, Mrs Ross, who is shortly to leave the district, and Miss Smith, another prominent member, who in the near future will be leaving for England. Both members were presented with tokens of remembrance, Mrs Ross receiving a fountain-pen, and Miss Smith an Eversharp pencil, each with initials inscribed on a gold band. Mrs Wintle, the president, also presented both Mrs Ross and Misa Smith with a beautiful bouquet. The recipients responded feelingly.

This was. followed by the singing of "For They are Jolly Good Fellows" and "Auld Lang Syne." The Tara group of members entertained with a play entitled "No Servants," in which the cast was Miss Beryl Brown, Miss Gwen Wintle, Mrs Cartwright, Mrs Wintle, Mrs Louis Wintle and Mrs Hilton Brown. Miss Sylvia King sang a yodelling solo. The hostesses were Mesdames Richer, Laurence and Gouk. . Officers were elected as follows: — Mrs' Cooper (president), Mrs Cartwright (vice-president), Miss J. Bowmar (Secretary), Mrs Gouk (treasurer), Mrs Lou Wintle (librarian), Miss P. Wintle and Miss O. Tantrum (hostess stewardesses), Miss B. Brown and Mrs H. Harrison. Mareretu The Mareretu Women's Institute meeting was held recently, eleven members being present. The roll-call Was "A favourite dish." The election of officers for the year resulted: President, Mrs lan Gorrie; secretary, Mrs Jury; committee, Mesdames Appleyard, Robert McGarroll, Burke, Flower and competition for a knitted dishcloth was won by Mrs Appleyard, with Miss Applej'ard second.

A dainty afternoon tea was served by Miss Spick, Miss Betty Appleyard and Mrs Morgan. , '

Poroti The monthly meeting of the Poroti Institute was held on February 8, the president, Mrs Robison, presiding over 11 members. The roll-call was: "Most interesting happenings during the holidays," and the competition, "Worked buttonhole and flower buttonhole." This resulted in Mrs A. Jones being first and Mrs Oldfield, Senr., second for worked, buttonhole, and Mrs Blackstock first and Mrs A. Jones second for flower buttonhole. A parcel competition was won by Mrs Dow and Mrs Thomassen. During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs A. Jones, while the trading table was well patrrinised. The singing of the National Anthem closed a pleasant afternoon. Titoki A delightful programme was presented at the annual meeting of the Titoki Women's Institute, when Mrs A. Alexander was elected president. The following officers were elected: Fresident, Mrs Alexander; vice-presi-dent, Mrs Wright; treasurer, Mrs Blake; secretary, Miss M. Alexander; committee, Mesdames Carruth, Fraser, Lyddiard, Meyer, Pearson and Miss Purvis.

Points prizes for the year’s competitions were won in the senior section by Miss Purvis, with Mrs Blake second, while Mi'ss Alexander won the junior section. The roll-call was recipes for sandwich fillings. The programme consisted of a travel talk by Mrs Wright, who described a trip she made by car from Calais through Belgium to Holland. Mrs Wright’s experiences proved both entertaining and instructive, and the members are anticipating further accounts of her wanderingS/bn the Continent.

A memory test was won, by Miss Purvis and Mrs W. McArdle. . . Mrs F. McLeod and MesdamesW. and K. McArdle judged the three competitions thus:—Pot of jelly: Mrs Carruth 1, Mrs Hunt 2. Collection of sauces and pickles: Mi'ss Purvis 1, Mrs Lyddiard 2. Loaf of brown bread: Miss Purvis 1, Mrs Hunt 2. From Miss McLeod’s contribution to the Golden Thread the members learned much of interest about the , habits of the kiwi. Through the Golden Thread this year it is hoped to study more New Zealand birds.

Mrs Alexander and Miss McLeod served afternoon tea. A vote of thanks was accorded the judges, the meeting closing with the National Anthem.

Marohemo The annaal meeting of the Marohemo Women's Institute was held on March 2. In the absence of the president, the vice president, Mrs. Trewin presided. The attendance was good. •The following officers were elected: President, Mrs. Fergus; vice president, Mrs. J. King; secretary, Miss N. Wallis; treasurer, Mrs. T. Robertson. The Roll Call was "How to remove a stain." A W.E.A. lecture "Trainirg the under Five Year Olds" was giVen. /*;
