Presbyterian Concert At Kaitaia
The Presbyterian Church Concert, now an annual event at Kaitaia, was held in the church hall on Tuesday evening.
For those who attended, there was no more than sufficient accommodation. Tire concert was associated with the Harvest Festival celebrations and the fruits of the orchard and produce of the garden, representing thanksofferings, were on display till the conclusion of the entertainment when they were sold, realising a goodly sum for the benefit of church work.
Mr J. Cowie presided and that the programme was highly acceptable was shown by the "heartiness of the applause ■ and the frequency of the encores. The concert opened with a pianoforte duet by Mesdames Clarke and Gair who, after a march, played “Danse Husse” by Tschaikowsky.
Mr Maxwell, who has 'only recently taken up his residence at Kaitaia, gained enthusiastic applause for his songs, “The Sailor’s Paradise” anti “Heart of Gold.” A recitation by Mrs Mitchell in the real Scotch accent was much enjoyed by all. Mouth organ solos by Mr Barry Matthews added further variety to the musical treat, these being followed by a solo by Mr Oscar Beck. Mrs Harold Rule appeared in duets, first with Miss Marsh, and then with her daughter, Miss Dawn Rule. Miss Tullock, another newcomer to Kaitaia gave a humorous monologue. “Absent” was sung by Mrs Malcolm Bird and then the two little Misses Morrison, Peggy and Pat, sang two Maori songs. A trombone solo was rendered by Mr J. Cousins. ' Mrs Jim Donnelly sang “Silver Threads Among The Gold,” while tap dancing by Miss Thelma Geard was also enjoyed.
Mr BegJey sang the “Rose of Tralee” and recited. Miss Helen Cowie sang the old favourite “Robin Adair,” after which Mr J. Paulson recited a humorous piece. Other items were given by Mr Smith, Miss Gladys Cowie, Mrs Shalders, Mrs Donnelly and Mr Begley. Accompanists were Mrs Gair and Mrs E. Clarke. Supper was handed round at the end of the concert.
A German aeroplane on a test flight from Germany to Rio de Janeiro made a forced descent on the South Atlantic, off the Brazilian coast, says a Berlin message.
