F.U. Urges Compulsory Military Training

The Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, after a spirited debate, passed resolutions assuring the Government of wholehearted support m steps taken to provide an adequate system of defence, but suggesting reintroduction of compulsory military training.
"Modern overseas developments in warfare show us that infantry is still indispensable for the consolidation of areas won.” said Mr T. D. Bathgate (Wellsford). who introduced the resolution regarding compulsory training.
“It would not only be an extremely sound defence measure, but also a great physical benefit- to the lads of 10‘ to 30. who would bo involved."
The resolution in favour of compulsory military training was carried by 20 votes to 7.
