Britain’s Useful Diplomacy

(Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 30,

The Associated Press says that British diplomatic activity, including important talks at Moscow and Paris, occurred during the week-end, resulting in a spirit of confidence at Whitehall. The most significant developments were:— (1) Sir William Seeds, new Ambassador to Moscow, gave an assurance to the Soviet in the following words: "I am instructed to convey Britain’s readiness to exchange views on ail current international problems.” (2) France gave an assurance of readiness to discuss differences with Italy immediately the Italian press campaign against France has abated. Sir William Seeds was received by both M. Litvinoff, Foreign Minister, and M. Kalinin, President of the Soviet Executive.

The latter, in an interview, stated: “It has been extremely friendly.” It is understood the assurances had a most favourable reception.
