Thieves Among Refugees

(Received noon.) LONDON, January 30. The Perpignan correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that fresh snowfalls have intensified the misery of Spaniards awaiting entry to France. Women and children are dying by the roadside. Though 13,000 have already been accommodated across the border, the situation eclipses the Belgian exodus into France in 1914. The French authorities are doing their utmost to meet the situation. They are establishing concentration camps and a safety corridor with train services to the interior. Many refugees, particularly women, are heavily bejewelled and beringed, indicating pillage of fellow fugitives. The British United Press Perpignan correspondent says order is being restored to Loyalist Catalonia. Two-way traffic has been established between Gerona and France, from where 5800 Loyalist soldiers have been repatriated.
