Six Men Trapped In Blazing Car
[Special to "Northern Advocate ”] GREYMOUTH, This Day. Six men were trapped in a blazing car at six o’clock on Saturday evening. They were compelled to stay there until assistance arrived. The car was driven by Mr J. Peake, and the party was returning from Hokitika after taking part in a cricket match. A short distance north of Gladstone, on the main highway, the car skidded and turned over on its right side on the edge of the road, bursting into flames. The occupants were unable to escape, as the doors had jammed. Fortunately another motorist saw their plight, and was able, but only with difficulty, to release the six men. The vehicle was totally destroyed. None of the occupants, however, received serious burns. Results of the finals of the Australian Lawn Tennis championships are as follows: —Men’s doubles: A. K. Quist and J. Bromwich beat J. Turnbull and R. Long, 6 —4, 7—5, 6—2. Ladies’ singles: Mrs Westacott beat Mrs Hopman, 6—l, 6 —2.
