Improvements To Esplanade Mooted
. Suggestions for the improvement of the on the northern side of the Town Wharf Basin were put forward by Mr R. H. Allan at yesterday’s meeting of the Whangarei Harbour Board. On a recent tour of the Bay of Plenty district he had been greatly impressed by the manner in which various towns had taken advantage of opportunities to beautify their surroundings. said Mr Allan. “We can only gain ideas by comparisons,” he said, in describing how at TauTanga the waterfront had been beautified by landscape gardening and attractive lamps on standards. “I would not suggest that we should go to such expense here, but many improvements cmild be made to the esplanade,” he said. Untidy Appearance. The existing wire fence was not a, thing of beauty, and was in constant need of repairs, he continued. It might well be replaced with a stone wall. The harbour board had planted a number of pohutukawas in the vicinity, but long grass gave an untidy ap-
pearance. The esplanadb was harbour board, property,, and the, responsibility for its appearance thus rested with the board and with no other local body, said Mr H, E. Hewlett, in supporting the suggestions. It could be made one of the beauty spots of the harbour. the board agreed that the engineer, Mr W. M. Fraser,' should investigate the possibilities of improving the esplanade.
