Big Pennies And Keep-To-The-Left

Two things impressed themselves upon Mr Dave Smith, now of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, who is revisiting Northland after an absence of many years.

They were New Zealand’s big pen-: nies, and the keep-to-the-left rule. “Your pennies are big coins of little value,” he chuckled, when chatting with an “Advocate” reporter this morning. The Canadian cent, worth about a half-penny, is of about the same size as a New Zealand sixpence. “Hudson Bay Blankets.” New Zealand bank-notes are larger than the corresponding bills in Canada. At one time, however, there were in use in Manitoba big bank-notes representing various denominations of the dollar. These were described as “Hudson Bay blankets.”

As in the United States, the rule of the road in Canada is “keep to the right,” and having been in New Zealand only a few days, Mr Smith is quite confused on Whangarei streets.
