COMMENTING on the 'cabled statement that 30 long-range Vickers Wellington bombers on order for the New Zealand Government would be flown to New Zealand as part of the Centennial celebrations, the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, said yesterday that the use of the machines at the time of the Centennial had not been considered. The first of the machines should be ready for delivery early next spring. There was little likelihood of any of them arriving before that.

“JJUCH of the machinery and plant to be used for the public demonstrations of the practicability of the Government’s plan to clear bush and drain low-lying land has already arrived in the Dominion,” said the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, yesterday. ‘‘The rest of the plant is expected soon. The demonstration will be made at Westport very shortly, although an approximate date has not yet been decided.”

A MEMBER of the Queensland bowling team which arrived at Wellington by the Awatea yesterday, Mr. A. McNiehol, of Mackay, Queensland, is believed to have set a record for rapid transportation from Queensland to New Zealand. He received short notice of a vacancy in the team of 29 men and four women, and flew 12(30 miles to catch the Awatea at Sydney. He arrived just in time to catch the vessel before she sailed on Friday evening. Just three days from the time he left home Mr. McNiehol was in New Zealand. ,
