Smaller Hay Harvest This Year. Good weather Is welcomed not by the holidays makers alone in Nortland. With crops of hay all ready for cutting, farmers are literally making hay while the sun shines. Oh many farms the yield this year is definitely down on the crop harvested twelve months ago, this being largely due to the late spring. A Maunu farmer estimates that his hay harvest will be only onethird of that gathered last year.

Weather Vagaries. Vagaries of the weather were discussed by a Pipiwai resident this weekend. During a recent storm, he said, the creek on his property rose three feet. There were thunder and lightning and rain “by the bucketful.” A house a mile and a half away, however, received no rain at all. Here the tanks had only two rings of water in them, and it was necessary to take the family washing a mile and a half up the valley, where water was plentiful.

' • • , * m Motorist’s Misfortune. More than unusual misfortune attended a motorist at Opononi yesterday. He had just parked his car on the roadside when another car struck it from behind, fortunately without doing serious damage. Dater in the day, the vehicle was standing by the road with several passengers”' on board, when it was struck again from behind, this time by a truck. Fairly severe damage resulted, one of the rear doors being smashed in and the rear windows shattered. None of the occupants was injured.

Careless Motorists In North. Many motorists unfamiliar with Northern roads, are experiencing difficulty in negotiating some of the Far North highways, reports our Kohukohu correspondent. A number of motorists failed to realise that Northland roads are not concrete speed highways. Sightseeing by drivers has been a common offence during the Christmas holidays, passengers diverting the driver’s attention on most dangerous roads. Speeding both up and down hills, and a general lack of courtesy, were noticed on the part of many, and it is considered surprising that no serious accidents occurred. • * * * The Trailer Craze. Much might be written about the trailers and caravans seen on Northland roads these holidays. There were caravans complete in every detail, and incorporating electric lights, sinks and, in the praseology of land and estate agents, “every modern convenience.” Some trailers were little more than boxes on wheels. Against this type there are trailers built to streamline designs. One seen in the street this morning was a splendidly-made Affair. It was all metal, and an ingeniously constructed metal top shielded the contents from the weather.
