CRICKET IN WHANG AREI WAS PLAYED UNDER VARYING CONDITIONS. FOLLOWING A BOISTEROUS DAY ON SATURDAY, WHEN PLAY WAS CONFINED TO IN-BETWEEN SHOWERS, YESTERDAY PRODUCED MUCH IMPROVED CONDITIONS, THE WEATHER THROUGHOUT BEING FINE. HOWEVER, THE WICKET WAS SHOWING SIGNS OF THE PREVIOUS DAY'S WEAR WHEN NORTHERN WAIROA AND WHANG AREI WENT ON TO CONTEST REPRESENTATIVE HONOURS.

High scoring was d feature of the match. Whangarei’s tally of 166 including 37, 36, 37 and 24, Northern Wairoa’s first innings of 80 coming from 16. 24, 12 and numerous small items. Going in to bat again. Northern Wairoa compiled 109 for the loss of five wickets, the figure including 20, 30, 11, 11 and 12. Fyfe hit up a brilliant 37 to set the ball rolling in Whangarei's first innings. An l.b.w. decision brought to an end a very fine display. Masters and Wilson put on one of the finest performances of the week-end. their 36 and 37 respectively being full of action and characterised by numerous boundary shots. Menzies played a very steady bat to compile 24. Clotworthy’s bowling kept Whangarei’s enthusiasm somewhat dampened. He took five wickets for 51 runs. Northern Wairoa made a disastrous start, five wickets being down for 34, and it Was only Ihe efforts of Izzard (16) and Hewiu (24) that enabled anything like a score being made. The remainder of the team was completely in the hands of the Whangarei bowlers. Second strike for Northern Wairoa, however, told a different story.
