Curious Accident.

A curious accident occurred in Coutts Street, Kilbirnia South, Wellington, when the horse of a rider, one of a party, took fright and bolted along the street. Without any thought of the courtesies of the road, it charged ahead till it encountered a parked sedan car, with which it collided headon. Though this brought the surprised animal to a sudden stop, the rider, went on, turned a somersault in the . air, and landed on his back on the roof of the car, denting it rather badly. Neither horse nor rider was seriously injured. # ♦ » *

Marquees Abandoned. At the monthly meeting of the Kaipara Hospital Board, discontinuance of the scheme for the erection of two marquees to provide temporary accommodation at the Northern Wairoa Hospital was explained by the chairman, Mr P. R. Walden. He said the marquees, when erected, had been found to be unsuitable. It had been decided to erect another style of temporary accommodation, using wooden floors with wooden walls to a height of four feet, joined by canvas to the roof, which would bo of iron, Mr Walden stated. The canvas portions of the walls could be rolled up in fine weather, and when the wards were not required they could be sold.

Boy Scout Badges. 'There are now 71 proficiency badges for Scouts, three new ones added this year being for backswoodsmen, motor mechanics, and rabbit-keepers. «** 9 ‘ Christmas Shopping Under Way. Christmas shopping has been in full swing this week, and figures staring into display windows trying to make up their minds what gifts to buy for father, mother, sister or Uncle Henry, have been frequent sights in front of every shop. Activity reached fever pitch in Whangarei stores last , night, and almost every man, woman and child on the streets, was laden with parcels. Business houses anticipate big things next week, but hope that with a clear week before Christmas Eve, the public will spread the remainder of *its' gift-shopping over as many days as possible.

* • • • Far North Roads in Repair. Kohukohu Town Board roads are undergoing a pre-Christmas grading. In the surrounding county districts, however, complaints are being received concerning the state of the roads, many of which are reported to be in very badly deteriorated condition. The Mangamuka-Kohukohu road, in particular, has come in for much comment.- The road has worn through its foundations in many places and unless immediate .steps are taken to repair the damage, the road will have to be re-formed. The cost' of this will be a heavy drain on county funds.
