Mr. A. Kelly Honoured At Church Social

Wednesday evening was the occasion of a happy function in Ihe Whangarei Methodist Church Hall. A crowd of young and older people had gathered to do honour to Mr Ashton Kelly, who is shortly to be married.

Picceedings were of a widely diversified nature, and the evening was a distinct success.

Evidence of ,Mr Kelly’s popularity in all branches of the church was shown by the spirit of jollity which marked the whole evening. He was the target for numerous quips and burlesques which kept the audience in happy mood. Not the least of these was the “bicycle wedding,” which portrayed the bride-to-be and Mr Kelly, die two witnesses and the parson, suit- : ably attired, on a cycling tour. A. Happy Time. The male witness, dressed in brief shorts, complete with taillight, a football jersey and spotted cap, was the centre of amusement. The couple were duly married by the modest parson and a hurried exit was made. Mr R. Salmon was M.C. Competitions were won by Mrs T. Hirons and Rev. H. Tozer, Mr A. Kelly and Miss Valda Cavanagh, Mrs Cummack and Mr B. Castles. _ Items were given by the Rev. A. Sanft, of Hikurangi, and Messrs Larking, Dennis and Wilding. After supper had been sewed, Mr J. W. George, on behalf of those present, presented Mr Kelly with a beautiful striking clock, suitably inscribed. From the intermediate boys’ Bible Class, of which Mr Kelly is leader, an electric kettle was received. This was presented by Mr W. Flaveil on behalf of the class members. Short speeches testifying to the good work Mr Kelly had done, were given by Mr H. Bunby and the Rev. Tozer. In reply, Mr Kelly said that although he had always done what ho could for the benefit of the church, he hoped to do still more when he was married. Musical honours were accorded the guest of honour. The evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.
