S.O.S. From German Ship; Rescue Race

NEW YORK, October 26.

. Three ships, namely the United States freighters Collamer and American Traveller, and the Norwegian vessel Europe, are racing across the. North Atlantic in response to a distress signal from the German liner Deutschland, 21,046 tons, - which is fighting a fire' in one of her holds. She is 200 miles south-east of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and has 591 passengers and a crew of 390 aboard.

Conflicting reports at first caused uncertainty whether the ship was in immediate danger. The Associated Press reported receipt of a message that the fire was under control at 8.29 p.m., two hours after the first signal, but the passing hours brought no confirmation of the message. Also, the coastal stations reported that the Deutschland was continuing to-send distress signals, although not indicating the extent of the fire.

Shortly after midnight, however, it was confirmed that the fire was under control, and that the passengers were not in danger. The rescue snips expect Lo arrive at dawn, all having originally been within 75 miles.

The situation is complicated by a gale which is sweeping up from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and is expected to strike the Deutschland before dawn.
