Invaders Welcomed By 20 Chinese
(Received 2.15 p.m.) : i HANKOW, October 27. Ten thousand Japanese troops landed to-day from 30 ships on the Yangtse at Hankow, after which naval and military officers jointly “occupied” the city. They were welcomed by a score of Chinese, bearing a huge banner. Otherwise, the city is practically deserted and virtually cut off. Some fires are still burning. X The biggest destruction was in the Japanese concession, which is a mass of smouldering ruins. Chinese, before the evacuation, removed a vast amount of portable goods, which could possibly be of service to the Japanese, including factory machinery, pontoons, and even iron sewer covers.
At Chungking, the Chinese military spokesman states that a new line of defence has been established outside Wuhun. China’s policy is based on prolonged warfare. The forces at Wuhun have resisted the enemy and inflicted heavy casualties in the- last j six months. Manpower will now be transferred further to the interior.
