A New Brigantine

Concurrent with the sale of the square-rigged ship Joseph Conrad to the United States Maritime Commission, an announcement was made that Mr. Alan J. Villiers, who owned the Joseph Conrad when she visited New Zealand, has ordered a new vessel to be specially built for him at Port Cygnet, Tasmania. The vessell has been designed by Mr. J. Murray Watts, of Philadelphia. The new vessel will be brigantine rigged, her dimensions being 75ft. 6in. on the waterwine, beam 20ft. lOin. and depth 10ft. Gin. She will be entirely constructed of Tasmanian timber, and, although provision has been made for an auxiliary engine, at the beginning of her career at least, she is to be run as a sailing ship. Mr. Villiers expects the new ship, which he will name Marian Eleanor, to be ready in the early part of 1939. He intends the. ship primarily for cruising in' Australian waters, and has provided quarters for six youths under sail training. The Joseph Conrad will be employed by the .
