Colonel Roscoe Turner, who is the first man to win twice the prize of £11,250 which goes with the American Blue Riband of racing, the 300-mile unlimited free-for-all air race for the Thompson Trophy, is a picturesque figure in aviation. Long regarded as one of the leading American pilots, he composted, with Clyde Pangborn, in the Melbourne Centenary air race, finishing third in the speed section. To repeat his 1934 success in the Thompson Trophy race this week, Colonel Turner travelled at 283.419 miles per hour.
